Due to the terminal nature of my Alfa's MOT I have decided to get myself a big ol Barge. So 1998 7 series BMW's look tempting but I cant say I know a huge amount about them so what do I need to look out for on these?

To be honest I actally know nothing about them so any hints will be greatly recieved.

Cheers people

Get one with the 4.4l engine instead wink

Other than that they're nice. Take a nosy at my profile to see my ownership record.

Cheers,

I agree.

I have a 535i (same engine), which is lovely, super smooth, quite, quick........but just not as good as the 4.4.

If you specifically want a 3.5 make sure that it is a lot cheaper than an equivalent 4.4.

I have had one issue with mine. The crankcase breather diaphragm split, which to be fair is a DIY job to sort-out (this is a fairly common one on both variants of engine) and my Vanos is a tad noisy (post July 98 for Vanos).

Engine cooling pipework/rad............

4.4 better than 3.5 easier to find a decent one anyway

Just done 500 miles on a tank in my 4.4 and averaged 30 plus mpg so it doesn't have to hurt the pocket if you drive one

Can't add anything other than

The M62 4.4 is the bargain to go for in my mind. Got mine a few months back. The usual problem areas are the cooling system (radiator and resorvoir prone to splits and cracking) and suspension problems. Get one with good history and you should be ok. I've spent £200 changing the pads all round, fluids, all the filters, oil and sparks since I've had it. Mega comfortable cruisers that can achieve 30mpg on a nice long run. Look out for pixel damage on the dash as its annoying and the sensors for the park distance controls seem to give up after a decade of use.
