Its not brilliant to be honest, its ok at quiet sound levels, but when its louder the quality suffers and there is not much I can do to make it better, so I'm thinking of a replacement. The only trouble being with this is, am I going to have to lose the current display computer in the centre console? I quite like it and use it frequently. Preferably don't want to spend more than £250-£300. What options do I have? Mine is the 6 CD changer in the boot with a tape player hidden in the dash.

No point changing in that budget imo.

My brother has an e39 5 series and the speakers are seriously shocking. Mine are okk, they are harden karden ones or something along those lines.

I used to have a mazda which had bose speakers all around, probably the best I had ever heard!

But yeah, personally I just think "put up with it" tbh.

Yeah I was thinking budget was a problem, I'm a bit stretched at the moment being Xmas and all, that and Angel Eyes and Rear Hella's being a priority at the moment may make me wait until next year when I may have some more money to spendbiggrin It just listening to music when driving is a big part of the whole experience for me, so I'll have to do something.

Is it a simple swap, like buy 4 speakers and swap them over type process?

Or is there more involved?

I've the tape unit in my '99 530d tourer and want to fit the 6 changer in the back, does anyone know which is the right BMW model CD multi-changer to get?

I've seen quite a few for sale on eBay but don't want to get one that's not compatible.

Get a Sony Sound on Top amplifier (in-line high level amp). It's the quick fix for the e39 and e46. Plug and play, costs between £70-100 on eBay (can't buy them new anymore).

The Blaupunkt THA range of amps are alot better than the Sony ones, also plug and play.

I would look at getting the THA-555, put in some DLS R5 speakers up front and add a sub at a later date when funds permit.

The amp will cost around £250 and the speakers around £130.

Use some sound deadening over the speaker enclosures that the speakers sit in and you will be able to get the fronts down to around 55hz, which is pretty low.

Have a look in your boot. You should have the CD changer cable sitting behind the flip down panel on the left hand side. If so, any E39/E46 changer will fit and it should just be plug and play.

As for sparks original question, give up unless you've got a huge pile of cash. Seriously frown In the end I simply retrofitted the BMW Business CD unit and a Sony Sound on Top amp, and swapped my 6 CD changer for an MP3 compatible version. I've now got 600 tracks and half decent sound quality with OEM looks, but it's still not great.

Not very.

1) Remove radio and unplug quadrablock
2) Plug Sony loom into back of radio.
3) Plug Quadrablock into Sony loom
4) Run the other end of the wiring loom down through the to the passenger footwell.
5) Stuff the amp up behind the glovebox and plug it in.
