Just the age, sport became M sport in summer 2006 IIRC.

Body kit and more important the suspension.

M-Sport uses really good Bilstein shocks and Eibach springs, soaks up the poor uk roads better than the sport or SE.

Not really, as mentioned above the M Sport has different bumpers, 17" wheels and M Sport suspension, plus a few other mainly interior cosmetic differences. The Sport appears to be almost identical to an SE with slightly different suspension, it had stock bodywork, 16" wheels and "sport" suspension which I believe was a variation on the stock suspension with different springs, rather than the M Sport suspension which is completely different spec. There also appears to have been quite a long overlap between the arrival of the M Sport and the departure of the Sport, I think for about a year or so until shortly before the facelift where they co-existed on the model listings.

My understanding was that the specs were ES, and higher specced SE The Sport and M Sport being the equivalent level spect with bodykit, shocks, trim etc.

M Sport started on 55 plate cars.. there was an overlap before the Sports were stopped.

I have a June 06 120d M Sport, and my better half has a 118d Sport (Sept 2006).

Differences on the Spec are :-

different suspension as mentioned.
different front and rear bumpers and side skirts (the M Sport was never facelifted externally in 2007).
Different alloys.
Better fabric on the standard seats, with sensatec (leather look) side bolsters.
Multi function steering wheel standard on M Sport.
puddle lights in door handles standard on M Sport.

I think theres some other little differences too.
