The fan not doing what the controls indicate sounds like the final stage resistor (aka hedgehog). About a £50 part from BMW and an easy if fiddly DIY.

Have you checked the fuse for the rear screen?

Well it can be the final stage resistor, or it could be your actual fan blower on it's way out. I have just gone through the same process. Resistor was swapped which resolved the problem for a short while, but the fan still didn't work to the same effect as when new. Eventually the blower died taking the new Resistor with it, so had both swapped out. Heating now fully restored. One thing you can try to to get the blower going again, is try pulling fuse 50, then replacing. This worked on mine for a while.

Hedgehog. £50 part but very very fiddly to do yourself. Local Indy fitted mine for 1hr labour charge.
