Does anyone supply their own oil when taking an in-warranty car for servicing at their local dealer? My oil change isn't due for another 3k or so so at the moment I'm just planning ahead, but when I asked the local dealer the rough cost for future reference, I was given a figure of around £175 for the service, £100 which is the oil itself! This is for a 123d which uses Castrol Edge 10w60 (same as M Cars) so I guess that explains the price to some extent, but it only requires just over 5L which means I'd be charged around £20/L, about double the cost if I buy it myself from Opie oils. Having not done the obvious thing and asked the dealer yet, I was just wondering if its standard practice to allow the customer to supply oil, or are some dealers more resistant than others?

cheers
Chris

I supply my own BMW Approved oil when my car is serviced by the main dealer. They have no problems with me doing this - I use Castrol Edge 0w30.

I've also had no problem supplying the oil when I have taken my car in for a service. I advised BMW upfront that I would be doing this and confirmed I would obviously supply the correct oil.

Geeze, there is no way I would put the hideously priced Castrol Edge in a 1 series. It isnt really obligatory in M cars.
I would find a similar, quality oil and save yourself £50.

Soper BMW of Lincoln were a pain in the ass when I asked to supply my own oil,

Sytner BMW now pricematch local independants, much like VW do.

Hello Mr G.

Who'd have thought we'd make the switch from the BEC forums to BMWs?

I'm not sure whether or not there will be the equivilent anywhere near you, but I have a seemingly world-class indie within spitting distance and I wouldn't now take the Alpina anywhere else.

Hi Neil

Unlike any other 1 Series, Edge is what's now specified for the 123d for some reason, so unless you put in the correct spec (10w60 - in itself not a common oil) I assume they aint going to cover any engine problems under warranty, so I dont have a lot of choice.

Hi Tim, yep a bit of a difference, a few more creature comforts in the Beemer!!

I'll certainly be hunting around for a good indi in a couple of years, but its only a year old at the mo so I'll probably stick with a dealer for the meantime, until it's out of warranty.

Cheers to everyone else for the comments, sounds like most of the dealers should be OK with it. beer

Is that all Sytners? When you say price match is that just the oil price? As mentioned elsewhere we need to get our E46 serviced and there is a Sytners virtually next door to work and my indy has just moved to a place miles away.

Best to stick with what BMW would have used themselves, otherwise there will be problems.

I'd have thought more dealers would have caused a fuss, as they lose the sale of 5-6 litres of oil, and if they charge double at 20 quid, thats 50quid profit gone, i'd imagine they are more happy with the fact you come to them in the first place as a repeat customer than worry about the loss.

I use Sytners in central Brum. They never have any issue with me supplying my own oil when my 120d is in for service.

I usually buy the requisite Castrol Edge in the required volume off a guy on ebay. He supplies it in 1L bottles carriage paid to my door.

It's the BMW factory fill and what BMW dealers use if you just use their oil. It's run on it since new so I've just stuck with it.

Just ordered 9 litres of it for £52.50 from Ebay.

Thats interesting, mine is filled with 0w30 just like yours but when i told my indie he said it was a bit thin and more suited to Motorsport engines. He uses 5w30 (or it might have been 5w35?)

I dont know anything about oil so wil have to question him further!

There is an Edge 5w30 but it isn't BMW LL01 approved I don't think?

I dont understand oil so thats the main reason I simply stick with what went before. The car has done 160k now so it cant be doing that much harm.
