Hi

As i speak my car is sitting in a lay-by off a dual carriageway, It's getting recovered later on today.

The reason why it's there is gear selection issues, it just simply wont select any gear, it displays neutral with the fault cog, when you try for first or reverse it just simply clicks and clogs and thumps trying to find the gear, but nuthing.

It all just happened on Tuesday morning when it wouldn't start, but fiddled around and it managed to get into Neutral and started, another hour of fiddling around between gears got it into first, took it for a spin, drove fine, worked all the way through all gears without a hitch, but was running in safe mode with the warning cog illuminated during the drive, but it went capput again, that's why its sitting in a lay-by! hehe

The car in question is a 2002 325ci sport with 96k, had the clutch and slave cylinder replaced previously,

Any help will be really appreciated, and thanks in advance.

It isn't an SMG, it will be SSG on a 325 which is a different system - reknown for being problematic.
Get it into a dealer to find out exactly what is wrong.

Google BMW SSG PROBLEMS too.

Because your car (and the 330) was fitted with a system called SSG. Don't confuse it with SMG because it isn't the same thing.

Dealer is your best bet here imo.

I can't afford ridiculouse dealer rates, i'm going to give my local indy a call later on.

I did a diagnostic check, got a P1850 fault code, googled it, only info i got was off some Audi forum.

P1850 Data-Bus Powertrain Missing Message from Engine Contr.

Quick update,

Dropped it off to my local indy, called me later on, diagnostics revealed two codes for the following:

Gear-lever selection sensor

gear selection angle sensor

not the exact words, but along them lines.

It's going up the ramp tommorrow, so we'll see what happens...
