Are these very reliable cars and apart from the Fuel Bill would you recommend this as a motorway car for family trips etc ?
Whats the down side to owning this type of car e.g : Servicing costs ?

that car looks lovely. just check for everything electrical, these cars have a lot of it! just ensure no warning lights, make sure everything works as it should. check steering, try and go over speed bumps to see if there is any knocking. gearbox should be silky smooth. and as far as i'm aware those huge V12 engines are just sublime, and if well maintained will just go on and on and on and on and (you get the idea) indefinitely, they are capable of huge miles. i know of someone with the exact same as this, E38 750il and it's covered over 300k miles and it's still absolutely fine.
as for motorway trips....think about it....it's a huge comfortable car with leather everywhere, and a big V12 with plenty of torque. that should answer that motorway question

The one in the link does not from what I can see appear to be an 'L'....so it won't have the extra room in the back nor the heated, reclining rear seats! Rather it is the swb version. The advert also doesn't make any mention of the mileage???
The one that I will have for sale shortly (on behalf of a friend) will be as follows:
E38 750iL in Individual Romantic Red Metallic with Sand Beige Leather (with red piping). Genuine 58K miles on the clock, FSH last serviced at 56K miles. Same 18" wheels as the car in the advert with nearly new Dunlops all round, white light upgrade etc. All other "iL" refinements present (double glazing TV, SatNav, DSP sound system, extended leather etc etc... as far as I can tell except picnic tables.
The car is due back from my paintshop this week where it has been ONLY to sort a small area of peeling lacquer on the offside C-pillar and scuffs on the valance below the rear bumper (have photos to prove). Once back the wheels will be sent of for refurbishing and the car will then be ready.
As for the way these cars go? I can vouch having had a couple of weeks of the car on loan whilst my 540i Touring was out of action that they are a phenomenal peice of engineering! If it doesn't sell I may be taking the family to the south of France in it this summer!

And this is the 5.4L V12...not the old 5.0L.

If I didn't have seven cars myself already...I'd have it! If it doesn't sell...so what as far as I'm concerned...we'll all going to the south of France in it instead!
I actually have no vested financial interest in selling this car. Just a favour to a friend...if it doesn't sell it's a favour to me! Well, not 'me' actually as from the driver's seat on a long journey there is little difference between this and my E39 540i Touring as I have virtually all the same spec in that car too (double glazing, DSP etc etc ). The real 'winners' out of a non-sale will be my 3 kids luxuriating through France in the 750iL!
Given that the two boys disgraced themselves and the family by having a brawl in the village between themselves on the walk back from the school bus this afternoon resulting in a black eye for the bigger of the two (by some margin!)....I don't think they deserve this luxury!
[Suffice to say both of their X-Box 360s will also be listed on Ebay (with No Reserve) in the next 2 weeks...Keep an eye out for these and other 'bargains'!]
if it's as good condition as derin says, then i say to the OP...seriously think about it. it's a better spec car for starters, being the long wheel base version, and really, only 58k miles with FSH on a car like this really is barely run in, like i said, they can go on for mega miles if treated well.

I may be getting the car back from the paintshop at the end of the week (they've already done the work but it's just a question of my friend and I finding the time to get there as it's a fair distance away and we need to collect both that car and my own E32 735i).
However, then I'm going to Spain for a week and then the wheels will still need refurbishing before the car is ready. So I'm guessing possibly another 3 weeks or so to complete.

The electrics for these engines are complex ,but do share parts with other BMWs(IE e30 325i bits) so are available .I had an E32 750iL ,and it truly was a thing of wonder ,but was also the only car I have ever owned that threatened to be LESS economical than my old 3.9 V8 Range Rover!Watch out for leaking inlet manifold gaskets causing a miss-fire that you probably wont even spot!
I’ve had a lot of great cars in my time, but the one I remember the best is probably my E38 750i, and I’ve never stopped going on about it. Mine was a “short” wheelbase model, yet it still had the heated reclining REAR seats, which I think were standard.
I loved the engine and the leather and the proper double-glazing. It was more of a cocoon on the motorway than even my s-class, and it did the best impression of standing still at high speed, it was quite uncanny. It wasn’t just quiet, it stopped the noise from other vehicles getting to you.
Best of all, it wasn’t even that thirsty. I suppose it would drink around town, but I would average 23mpg and get 27 mpg cruising. I didn’t have any major problems, but there’s nothing about them that’s not complicated, so I’d be careful. Get a good one and you’ll be singing its praises for years.

Great cars to drive but recommend that you set aside a 'pool' of funds for the things that will invariably go on the car.
Skimp on the upkeep and it will come back very hard on the wallet.
If the adaptive suspension works, which it should (!), then they can be thrown around like a much smaller car and are very very quick along the B-roads.

My boss had one for years, swb 5.4. It also had elctric rear seats. Lost one half of the engine just after it was bought which resulted in a huge warranty bill. The rear suspension had to be replaced which was very expensive and the fuel tank failed twice, once right after a £70 fill up.
Awesome car though, quick, quiet and so smooth. Thirsty round town and not so thirsty on a run.
Boss man in Japan had an Alpina B12 which was the mutts.
