Has anyone done this? Do you get a discount on the car? Good experience or a hassle?

Any experiences would be appreciated.

I have a couple of friends who've done the Merc version of this.

Always had good things to say about the experience but I know a couple people have posted elsewhere on this site to say they had problems with hotels etc.

Give it a go and tell us how you get on

i dont think you buy the car off the factory, just pick it up from there, so all discounts avail would still apply.

| cant see them giving you extra off if you pick it up, there is still an admin time cost with the pickup, tour, etc, and whats one car less on a boat to them?

Have done it a couple of times with Mercs, and it was a good experience. Merc pay the costs of your trip for the same cost as normal dealer delivery, with a night near the factory and a factory tour. Personally, I used their travel department to organise an extra couple of days on the way home, and they were a first class travel agent. Of course I paid the extra.

But when I asked my dealer if I could do factory collection for my BMW, delivered June 08, I was told BMW do not offer this - and he apparently checked with BMW UK before answering me. Has it just been introduced or was my dealer wrong?

AFAIK the only people who can organise it are the Diplomatic and Military sales at BMW Park Lane.

This is true; I was speaking to them about this a couple of weeks back. Back in the 1980s when I lived in Germany I picked up my first 2 cars from the factory (which was cool!) so with one coming through Dip & Mil sales later this year I asked if I could do it again as it still mentions this on the international web site. I initially got a negative response but when pressed I was told it could be arranged BUT it would NOT be a "BMW UK" car as it would not have gone through their database and pre-delivery stuff. Therefore it would end up as a personal import in effect despite being ordered through Park Lane.

Not certain but I believe that such cars might not be taken as Px by main dealers against any later purchases and you wouldn't get the UK dealer warranty in such circumstances.

Looking at E60.net it seems that customer pick up is available to NA customers but not UK customers (until this year, apparently).
