Contact the usual BMW specialists. Quarry Motors in Sheffield or FAB in Cinderford Glos.

How can you tell the difference from looking at them?

What would be a good price to pay for a used Z3 rack? Do they bolt straight on or do they need modification?

Right, there's a breakers down the road with one off a Z3M for £125. I'm wondering weather to go for it for my track car.

Really? Balls.

I wonder why they fitted a slower rack to the most focused model in the range?

IIRC it was to do with drivers not over-saturating the front tyre's response patch, inducing instability at the rear and unwanted oversteer.

There is also a trade-off about making the car too fidgety on straight bumpy roads at speed

Is it worth the effort then Mike?

To me, yes Rich. My Sierra rack is quicker still - I found the standard rack too slow for my driving. Like anything you get used to it though.
Little fast roundabouts are a flick of the wrists now instead of half an armful of lock.

I guess that's why they quickened it up on the E46 Compacts and then the rest of the E46 range....with an even quicker one on the CSL

@Caboose - do you have the pics of the rack handy? I've taken a punt on a rack that I haven't seen, and would like to have something as a reference when it arrives.

Excellent, I'm 99.9% sure that's what I'm getting - that p/n doesn't come up on RealOEM, and neither did the one he read me which I think was the same.

Excellent! Hopefully not bad value at £120.

Chuck a request through Partsgateway next week, and see what they bid you then.

£120 plus p&p, which was another £10 iirc.

I've not fitted mine yet, will do over the next couple of weeks when I get a chance.

What I have done is confirm the need for a faster rack. The standard one is waaayyy too slow when you're catching the back end on track. Do-able, but needs to be better.

Have you swapped steering wheels yet?

I fitted the Z3 rack this week onto my M3 Evo, along with coilovers and a few other trick bits.

The steering rack has to be the single best mod I've made to the car. It now feels a lot more connected, the steering is more direct and makes the car feel agile, rather than driving like the play bus. It turns in so much better now, no need to feed the wheel 360 degrees just to negotiate a roundabout smile

It's awesome, should be the first mod for any E36 owner, that's if you can find one that is smile

THAT'S what I needed to hear!

I'm going to do three mods in one hit, so should have a very different car by the end of it - Z3 rack, AP brakes and E46 diff ratio biggrin

E46 M3 diff - 3.62 ratio. Unless I get talked into buying some Motorsport gears - 3.91 or 4.10...

Also got an E34 535i LSD coming my way, but not sure of case size on that yet.
