Hooning about a bit earlier and the 530d engine suddenly died. It's a 2002 M-Sport model (if that matters) and also an auto so it drifted along so I stuck it into neutral and stopped. Cranked it over and it started, then stopped again within 5 seconds. Tried again and the engine cranks, but will not start.

Initially I thought fuel filter or something (3/4 full tank) then I noticed that the glow plug light is not going out.

Towed home and will investigate more tomorrow but any ideas welcomed. What fault causes this sort of behaviour? I think if it was just one one glow plug she'd still run. Perhaps a replay somewhere to all glow plugs?

don't thing it will be glow plugs as it doesn't need them to start once warm, light will be on to indicate an engine fault.

number of causes therems likely is loss of pre supply fuel pressure.

things that could be at fault are the presupply relay under glove box or the inline fuel pump...when u turn on ignition is there a buzz from under the passenger side floor?

other issues could be common rail wiring, hp pump failure and another common petrol in diesel (youll be supprised how many do it)

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like a proper mechanics job rather than some monkey-fisted spannering from me today smile

Definitely not petrol in there and certainly seems fuel supply related. Will get it seen at our local indy tomorrow.
