it's possibly just the remains/warning of a bad gauge.
Which bit was wrong? if the needle was stuck, the car will have known, and shut down itself before running out, if it was the tank sender, then it will have run out, and will be showing the warning for a) possible high pressure pump damage or b) warning that it has a bad gauge and could run out at any time.
BMW would probably tell you that you'd need a new pump to be certain, but get the code read and erased and carry on.
I don't think new gen diesels get airlocked like mechanical injection systems, but maybe small bubbles in the fuel rail can play havoc with pressure regulation. If that is the case, than any diesel specialist, or even decent garage will be able to bleed the rail if needed and reset everything.
