Ive recently bought a 730d sport...my 1st week of driving it has been brilliant...what an awesome car! It is quick, comfortable, looks brilliant etc etc

BUT....

£100 diesel....has given only 490 miles which is approx 22mpg.....this is about 25% motorway and 75% local......but still seems very high to me....my 530i(petrol) gve muc better mpg...

The 730d has FBMWSH but has high miles 100k......

What can I do to improve econonmy?.....ive got 3bar pressure in the tyres (21" genuine alpina wheels)...

Is injector cleaner a no-no on these cars?

By the way, I drive sensibly most of the time!

That is very low, mine do on average around 33mpg, some as high as 40. Have you reset the mpg since you got it? a tank should give at least 550 miles if not closer to 600. get it looked at. (what year is it?)

Not a BMW, but we had a (new) 3 Litre Mercedes CLS Diesel. which is a big heavy car, and that used to return around 35mpg combined..........

Yes, it certainly is disappointing economy wise.....

Its due a service in 2500 miles according to the OBC, so I'll see if that helps, but I cant see a service adding 10mpg....I was hoping it would average30mpg, but 22mpg is just a bit too heavy for my liking...equates to £100+ per week in juice.......

So any tips on how to improve mpg?...

Injector cleaner?>

super diesel?...(ie premium diesel?)

Any suggestions....

I suspect the 75% local driving is really taking its toll. I'd suggest you go and have the most boring drive of your life down a motorway. Start off by brimming the tank then go and drive like a granny for as long as you can stand, then brim the tank again and do a proper mpg calculation. If you did say 200miles and still only got low 20s then something's definitely buggered, if you're in the 30s then I'd say things are looking up.

In my experience it's the local stuff that's really does for mpg. I drive 135miles a day (boring commute) 30odd of that is B roads the rest is M11/A14 joy, so about 25% local driving. I'm averaging 31/32 in my 528 currently, I know if I didn't have to do the first 20miles in the morning across country I'd definitely be a happy few mpg points higher!

Cheers,
Rob

+1

My 05 535d averages around 20/21/22mpg with predominantly round town work.

This is interesting ,i'm not sure diesels in urban traffic are that brilliant . I Have a 120d auto 177bhp. One late evening i was coming home on the M4 10 miles at 80mph =47mpg 10 miles @70=56 and 15 miles at 55-60mph an amazing 72mpg.

Bearing all that in mind i have done 10 miles around london (W4 W3 NW10.)mid morning 10-30am normal london urban stuff no major hold ups showed OBC 21 mpg!!!.Don't think diesels get warmed up properly in slow traffic .

Yes Im beginning to gather that diesels are not good on short runs, 2 -3 miles and they are barely warmed up, and stop start traffic certainly takes it toll on the economy....

Its showing 34.4mpg on a steady motorway run which is good I guess given he size of the car......I think the trick is to have a very very light foot around town to try and maintain a reasonable level of mpg.....
