Dynamic pack is pretty much a must, which brings leather sports seats, sports suspension, dark headlining, etc.
Media pack also is pretty much a must, which brings Pro NAV, bluetooth, autochanger.
Mine also had :-
20 inch alloys - loved them to bits
Reversing cam - very handy on something 5+ metres long
Towbar - hard to retro fit, but you either need one or you dont
Xenons - not worth it in my opinion
USB - good job, not sure if it works with the iphone
7 seats - kind of got them 'free', but never used them
Mine was a 3.0d, but i fitted a tuning box (www.tuningbox.com) which gave me pretty much the power of the 3.0sd.
I also changed the front grills from the black ones to the platinum ones

Thanks for that notes taken, out of interest what real world range are you getting from a tank?
Umm... cant remember. Mine was a Nov 07 one, so it was the last of the non ED (and thus higher tax) models. I averaged around 28mpg in it if that helps. Long runs it could break 32mpg.We've got a 2008 3.0sd. Essential options in my view are the Xenon (spelling?)lights, the suspension package, CD changer and bluetooth. Getting the dynamic and media packages covers it. I also thing this car looks so much better with the 20" wheels on it (and the ride in ours is still pretty good).
Re economy we're getting 22-23mpg on a run (although that said I don't aim for an economical driving style).

Love mine. Its a great all round practical car.
Tips - totally agree re dynamic and media packs.
Tow bar - yes but BMW option is v pricey (decent bit kit tho and great for carrying bikes on).
suggest you go for hi fi upgrade as well if you're into music.
There's an auxilary audio in so you would be able to run any MP3. That said I have full Ipod connectivity on mine but it doesnt come cheap.
personally I rate the comfort seats option but tis v pricey.
Get 27 mpg from my 3.0SD doing mostly urban driving. It does have a surprising turn of effortless pace.
Swapped an M3 for my X5. When I did it I thought I would really miss the M3 but the occasions when I really wish I had the M3 back are much rarer than I imagined.

Looking at the new shape X5 diesel, any must have options? And does the ipod connector work on the Iphone?
Any other thoughts/ advice appreciated!
Looking at the same thing myself right now. Like others, I prefer the look of the SE. Dynamic Pack and Media Pack are a must, and if you get a new X5 from UK stock before 31 March both these options are free (worth just under £6k) and you'll still get a hefty discount over and above this.Any other thoughts/ advice appreciated!
Other must haves for me are xenons, SP glass, a speaker upgrade (standard items are woeful), and USB. Nice to haves are heated seats and steering wheel, and panoramic roof.
Currently trying to persuade the OH that she will be ok with such a big car.

How hefty a discount? The issue for me now is that I ended up taking too long to decide and the car I had my eye on (space grey, black leather, aluminium trim with the essential options above) has gone and everything else is in a colour combo I don't like (refuse to have bmw wood trim - although I assume this could be changed for a price) or is far too overspecced (expensive stuff like 3rd row seats, etc). Looks like I'll be waiting to see what offers are around towards the end of Q2.

I would prefer the 3rd row of seats (although don't *really* need) - Any idea how many of these are kicking around in stock?
A few of the cars my dealer came up with had the 3rd row seating so you should be able to find one.
Whatever car they come up with, price it on broadspeed as my dealer was beating their price as long as I took bmw finance.

Ours has the 3rd row seats and to be honest they are a pain to get out, very small, use the boot space and leave the occupants a bit close to the rear of the car for my liking.Gassing Station | BMW General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
