Hi

I am in the market to buy either a 330d or 335d (E90), are there any major differences between the two models as they seem to have the same 3 litre engine, apart from the price. Am i correct in thinking that the 335d is only in auto and not manual, does this have a great affect on the MPG on the 335d?

Also, would i be better off going for the M sport model, what are the differences over the SE or Cd, is it just lower suspension or are there a rake of extras with the M sport over the other two?

Looking at spending up to 25k for the right car, any help or comments would be highly appreciated.

If your budget stretches to it, the 335d is the better car. An excellent engine with some serious performance. That's not to say the 330d is a bad car - far from it - but I suppose it depends on which you prefer.

Oh, and I hear the 335d responds well to a remap rolleyes

yeah it's auto only. (335d). BMW say "there's no market" for a manual version.

Drivetrain you know, Engine the 335d has twin turbos and a very linear power delivery.

The 335d has 286bhp and 428ib torque. The Brand new 330d has 245bhp, but thats only been out a few months, the engine i presume you would be looking at is 230bhp.

All SE 335's come with The sport suspension and seats as standard. (SE 330d dont) Otherwise the M sport has a slightly different steering wheel and gearknob, a more aggressive front bumper and different skirts.

The Rear bumper on the M sport has a ghastly black diffuser type thing (which it isnt). Which detracts from the 335 wonderful twin pipes.

The Both cars respond well to tuning being turbos. The 335d can bolster is power from 286- to anywherre between 330-350bhp with swells of torque with it.

If you need anymore advice Email me, I have plenty of interesting vids and the like for you.

Im not sure on any 330d MPG figures unfortunately. The 335d can be very frugal thats for sure. Especially on the motorway.

It was my understanding that there was an issue with the amount of torque the engine generated, and a manual box?

But i could be wrong.

I would say probably a couple of mpg in favour of the 330d, but not massively so.

If your budget will stretch the the 335d, definitely go for it. (and if its 25K it will!)

I would imagine if you check out national prices - either via autotrader or bmw's site, you could get a 335d for less than some dealers are asking for the equivalent 330d.

Thats what I thought as well but I remember reading in autocar if memory serves me well that was the reason why BMW brought it in auto form only.

So the SE and M-sport 335D are pretty much the same apart from the differences you mentioned?

Yes mate aswell as SE standard chrome window surrounds and Non annthracite headlinging,

Which can be and has been spec'd along with shadowline window trim on many SE's.

Okay, thank you mate. Was looking at your profile i've started on a fiesta as well! Im hoping to get a 335D in a few years time! They would have come down in price a little by then. A lil of topic but whats your average MPG since you got the 335D?

In relation to the remap for the E90 335 - Would anyone know if the E46 03 reg 330i would benefit from a remap? has done 123k miles, full service history, oil change and engine flush approx 500 miles ago.. Would i be worried about clutches or gearboxes not coping with more power?

You will get marginal benefit from remapping a 3.0i, certainly not anywhere near the results of a turbodiesel.

Unfortunately N/A (Naturally Aspirated) engines dont give good gains from re-mapping like a turbo engined car.

Your better off spendng money on an aftermarket Exhaust system.

Been searching around the usual places on the net looking at the two different models and i think for the money i have i shall go for a top spec later model 330d rather than an early low spec 335d.

Any particular examples? I'm bored and i'd be curious to see what an equivalent 335d would cost....
