Its a common problem but I would imagine it depends on the severity.
Purely cosmetic may just be a mornings work. Utterly festooned with rust may need a few days to build back up. Try posting in the bodywork section with some photos.

if its cosmetic grind the rust right back an then with a 3m purple cleaning wheel go back over the area and then with hamerite rust gel follow the instructions on there its good stuff then a thin skim of fiberglass past grind a rough shape of the arch and then finish off with body filler once the area has been painted smear some axle grease behind the back of the arch lip have done this many times and never any comebacks. hope this can be of help to you

I had this on my E36 saloon really bad. Took it to a garage said they could sort it out. 2 months later back as bad as ever. turns out they riveted over arches on to it left the old rust at the back, didn't know this until the rust started again. so decided to get a Friend of a Friend to look at it. He cut the rust off re-welded genuine body parts from BMW knew someone at a dealer, repainted, but most important under sealed the inner arch and back of the outer arch and pumped wax into all cavities. That was two year ago and have a look at pic this was took 2 weeks ago. Not a lick of rust at rear, done a great job, done a deal that i would build a garage for him (just labour)but he did say that you would be about 600 quid. parts and all
