Since buying this vehicle I have noticed that everytime I open the bonnet there is evidence of water coming from this tank, i have replaced the cap and pipe that wraps around it, ( this was not original ), and the car doesn't get too hot, ( mid-way on temp guage ).
The only thing that I can think of is that it's been overfilled, as the float thingy that should pop up is no longer there.(Broken I think ).
Could this be it, or anyone have any other ideas.

The tanks are notorious for splitting.

Definately not split, comes from the cap.

Oooops!!! just had a closer look, and yes, the tank is split.
Oh well, might as well bite the bullet and buy a new one, you never know with second hand ones I suppose.
Thanx.

BMW expansion tanks would be more durable if they were made of chocolate. Mine was replaced by the previous owner due to splitting. Its a very common complaint on late 90's early 00's vehicles.
