E34 540i Starter Motor

Has anyone got any experiance of removing the starter motor on one of these ? Mine needs replacement but even with a bently manual to hand I can't get my head round getting the bloody thing off, I have tried various approaches including one with the engine jacked (changed engine mounts and adjusted steering box at the same time ) up to give me more room to get it out but its so bloody tight I could barely get the heatshield of it

Any tips ??? surely i'm making this far more difficult than it needs to be ....
