Ive just joined this forumn after browsing google for a while. Ive a specific question relating to the 118d.
Having read through numerous forums I have read many a time that there is no difference between the 118d and the 120d cars, the only difference is in engine management i.e software/ programming and that this is wholy responsible for the difference in power of 143bhp - 177bhp (2007 cars, onward). Firstly , I would like to know if anyone on the forum can confirm this to be true.
My second question also relates to this. If the only difference is in the software and that this can be re-programmed (as the chip tuning people do), why then do all the chip manufacturers quote an increase of around 30bhp for either car? Surely, if this can all be changed via software then the 118d could be re-programmed to give the same power as a standard 120d i.e an increase from 143bhp to 177bhp + another 30bhp, as would normally be possible for a 120d. Thus in theory the 118d could be increased from 143bhp to around 207bhp. However , not one web site from the chip tuning experts quote such figures!
I may be missing something fundamntal here, can anyone please offer an explanation.

Hi Aled - welcome to the forum wavey

linky so there's a bit more to it than just software - different injectors, turbo, gearbox ratios...

Thanks for the info, thats exactly what I was looking for.
For anyone reading this thread, it seems that there IS a mechanical difference between the 118d and 120d, both pre-facelift and facelift versions.
