I drive a 2006 118d (122 bhp) and as mentioned in another thread I also find it a little boring over the 70mph mark, not much guts really, but I cant complain about the performance in 1st/2nd/3rd, it seems to have all its guts down there! I also have a Golf+ Tdi 2.0 (140 bhp), which Ive had for around 6 months and its totally different to the BMW it terms of performance. Its pretty useless in 1st and 2nd but has quite a heffty punch once you get into 3rd gear. Infact if you welly the Golf at anything over 60, itll leave the poor 118d for dead (although it really hurts me to say that!) The Golf is just getting going at 70!!
With this in mind Im looking at the newer 118d (facelift) with 143bhp and maybe tune it to 171bhp with the economy chip which gives an extra 28bhp. Has anyone any experience of this power increase? whats the performance like? Also, anybody able to coment on the difference in performance between the post and pre facelift 118d?

The golf is lighter and has 20bhp more, no wonder it is much quicker than the 118d.

Evolve offer a good ECU re-map for your car. Tuning boxes can cause problematical, I wouldnt recommend one of those.

I have always wondered, has anyone ever remapped or chipped a company car?

I have a good mate who leases a car and he has done all sorts on the proviso he returns it as standard, however he is moving companies and getting his own motor - looks like a 118 or 120d ......and he is on about remaps..........

If I recall correctly the 118d has super long gearing (for economy) so no surprise it's not doing much at 70+ (I assume you are in sixth at this point).

I dont imagine the new 118d would be all that different to be honest - best go for a 120d you'll have more power and shorter gearing.

The VAG diesels dont look as good on paper but give more of a wallop when in the (brief) power band so feel faster when actually they're not wink

The Golf+ (plus) is acctually around 230kilos heavier, which is why Im so amazed at the performance difference. As for running out of power at 70+ ,it doesnt mater much whether Im in 4th , 5th or 6th , its still quite sluggish. Im not saying its unacceptably slow but Ive yet to find a gear in which it really outshined my old Astra 2.0 Dti with its 100bhp!
Ive tried it out against the Golf+ (with my brother in the Golf) and on every attempt (out of roundabouts, out of slip roads etc etc) the Golf was simply leaving me behined in the 118d, it was a little embarassing to be honest (this ungainly wedge just went away from me on every opportunity). The difference was in fact very noticable and very real (it didnt just seem that way!). The other day a Vauxhall Zafira Cdti (150 bhp) went away from me like a rocket....that thing must be over 1.5 tonnes! Thank goodnes for corners....at least the BMW can shine there!
