E39 540 touring I bought a few days ago has a really superficial oil leak coming from somewhere around the oil filter assembly. I can't tell whether it's a duff 'o' ring or something more serious until I get a chance to drain it and have a god look tomorrow,

Anyone know of any common faults in this area and if it's likely to be as simple as an 'o' ring or something ££££££

A bit pi$$ed off really, thought I'd bought a mint one! Well, I have really, apart form this it's perfect.

I have an E31 with the M62 V8 engine, That had an hose go.
The one which is secured with an jubilee type hose clip.
This is an rubber hose at the filter end then goes into an braided pipe under the exhaust manifold & above the engine sump. Cheap but akward to replace

Cheers.

Did it look like this

If so which hose went and did the entire hose need replacing or just re-terminating with a new clip?

The "O" ring on the filter housing lid (4)comes with a new filter but many just re-use the old one so it could be this. That hose clip No 16 could well be the problem as the rubber hardens with age, turning almost plastic so the clip cannot clamp it up tightly and in this case the hose and clip should be renewed.

New 'O' ring fitted and it seems to have stopped the leak. In the process of undoing the filter top I broke both the rubber mounts though....@rse. £8.50 from BMW for 2 bits of rubber with a thread on each end! bstds!

I suppose is a fairly cheap fox for an oil leak though smile

Just as a matter of interest, how much and what type of oil do these engines take/use?

Hose number 15 hardens with age then splits, Mine decided to dump all the oil while driving on an A road at 70 mph.
