Turn the ignition key and start motor engages and stays engaged even when I let go of key.

I have to turn the key back one to stop it.

Cars does not start whilst this is going on.

Any ideas?

Sounds like a fault with the starter motor itself.

Hi. I know this is a bitof a late reply . I've just bought a 4.4 x5 (USA based) and the manual tells me that you're not supposed to hold the key until it starts - you simply turn it to start position, let go and it'll keep turning over until it starts itself.

I know that only answers half your question in that your isnt starting at all, but i think the starter turning itself over is normal..
