My new car did something odd on Sunday.

I was giving the fleet a clean at the weekend, did the 5 first, then moved on to our other cars. When I had finished the cleaning I went back to the 5 whilst rearranging the cars into our more usual parking order and the front windows on the 5 had lowered themselves by about an inch and a half. I had left the car unlocked (not much crime down our way) probably for an hour or so, and it was a pretty warm day. I have been completely unable to replicate the problem since, and am somewhat confused by the whole thing.

Is there some clever feature with the E39 that lowers the windows if it is left unlocked on a hot day to stop you boiling your dog? Should I be looking for a fault of some kind? Or am I just going mad?

I've not heard of an anti canine poaching feature. It would be unusual as it could rain?

Could you have pressed down the open button on the keypad for an extended time by accident (while in your trousers?) as IIRC a long continous press lowers all the windows, and the fronts go down first.

I think they do that anyway, it certainly works the other way; all windows down, lock car and keep button pressed, all the windows will close.

They also have follow me homke lights btw. When you park up, with lights on, flash the high beams. Turn car/lights off, get out of the car and the lights will come on so you can get your drunken key in the front door without waking the wife.

Ahhhhh.... A case of RTFM. Yes the keys were in my pocket, I bet that's what it was... Phew I'm glad I don't have to have the dog temperature sensor replaced - I don't even have a dog...

I'd better tell the wife about the lights thing or she will have Derek Acorah round to contact our new E39 spirit guide...

if all the windows were lowered by the same amount then i'd go with you must have pressed on the key without realising it.
