To Start or Not to Start - Green eyed A/C LEDS
Discussion
Monday I picked up a 1995 740iL. This never occurred on the dealer's lot but as soon as I got home...
One of 3 things happen when I turn the key:
1) The A/C LED lights come on, dash lights up and the car start immediately - now down to about 1 out of 10 tries
2) The A/C lights don't come on, dash lights up and the engine happily cranks away but nothing else happens - up to 7 out of 10 tries
3) The A/C lights don't come on, a few dash light come on and nothing happens (no cranking or it clunks like a dead battery) 2 out of 10 tries
The order of 1-3 is apparently random. After a #3, I may get a #1, #2 or #3.
If I get the green A/C lights, it starts immediately with no further fuss.
On Monday it took about 3 tries before I'd get green A/C lights and a start, today it started on the first try and then took about 10 tries to restart.
Doesn't matter if it's hot or cold.
I've tried reversing the key (rotating 180) and cycling the alarm. All have no effect. The key fob (and I only have one) seems to remotely lock and unlock the doors fine and the alarm otherwise behaves. Still it acts like an "immobilized" problem.
Is there something in the key chip/battery that could be causing this? Bad ignition switch or a real problem? Or operator error??? (No warranty of course but might be able to get some help from the dealer - a multi-brand German car dealer)
New to BMWs so thanks in advance. Grady
