The centre bore of the E39 is a unique 74.1 mm, whereas all other BMWs use 72.5 mm. If you use spigot rings that can be had for little money the E31 wheels could fit, provided the off set is correct.

No, unless you have the centre locating hole bored out on a mill or lathe, which would far out weigh any 'bargain' cost to begin with

You mean the E39 wheels would fit the E31/8 series with the spigot rings, impossible the other way round.

you can get spigot rings that do decrease from the the e39 to the smaller hub sizes but i wouldnt trust them myself.

There is nothing to worry about fitting spigot rings, perfectly safe but in this case the OP wants to try & fit wheels with a 72.6mm hub centre to an e39 which has 74.2mm hubs or as near as damn it, & as previously pointed out this wish needs a trip to a machine shop to get the smaller centres enlarged so as to fit the e39.

i did just that with a set of 20" Alpinas from a e38 & fitted them to my B10 e39 Alpina, the cost £100.

Trust this explains things a little clearer;)
