E36 / E46 brake calipers advice...
Discussion
Hello,
I'm about to change the brake pads on my 2001 E46 325i (Saloon). Now last time I rocked up to the Auto Factors, bought brake pads and then went to fit them and they didn't.... when I went back with the old pads they matched them up with some and told me that my car was actually fitted with E36 brakes.
a. is this likely, or did they give me the wrong ones the first time?
b. can anyone tell me if there is an easy way to tell which I have
I'd like to buy pads and then whip the brakes off rather than have to scrounge a lift there having already taken my car to bits!
Cheers,
James

What brand of pad did they provide you with?
Fronts or backshttp://www.apec-braking.co.uk/apec_detail.asp...?
As you can see, looks like they were fitted in the E36 too - '98-'07 under Year column.

Fronts this time round, I know when I did the rears fairly recently... if memory serves, the pads they gave me also fitted a rover 214 or something pathetic.
I just did a track day and subsequently been advised to stick a set of these on: Ferrodo DS2500, I know my local auto factors 'Camberly Auto Factors' sell them, but I don't want to go through the hassle of buying ones that don't fit!

DS2500 are very good fast road pads, and if you use the image of the above link, you should have no problems seeing if the ones listed online are the same.I just did a track day and subsequently been advised to stick a set of these on: Ferrodo DS2500, I know my local auto factors 'Camberly Auto Factors' sell them, but I don't want to go through the hassle of buying ones that don't fit!

So your car is the black one in the Bedford pics?
How many laps could you do before the brakes faded? On Friday I could manage about 2 in my Z4, but as long as I took it easy into the two heaviest braking points they'd manage about 10 laps.
It is indeed, chronic body-roll included! How many laps could you do before the brakes faded? On Friday I could manage about 2 in my Z4, but as long as I took it easy into the two heaviest braking points they'd manage about 10 laps.
They were well into fading after 2 laps, but although they had faded, they still provided ample stopping power with a little increased pressure for a good few laps onwards... I didn't really go easy on them on any of the corners, the pedal finally went to the floor on about lap seven or eight.
Bigger brakes are the first upgrade I would go for, but unless I was going to gradually turn it track specific I think I'll just wait until I can upgrade to a whole new car!
I have just bought a set of DS2500 for my E46 325 compact which uses the same brakes as the coupe / saloon. Try europerformance.co.uk a full set set me back just over £200 with the 5% discount they are currently offering.
I am plan to visit bedford shortly so hopfully they will hold up well, I also have braided lines and uprated fluid.
Do you know if your 325 or the Z4 has brake cooling ducts that come from the front bumper? The sport compact has ducts as standard and they seem to help as I have not noticed fade even when driving hard.

My 325 definitely does have air ducts to help cool the front brakes... I have had brake fade on the road under some spirited driving... nothing like the track though, although I presumed it would be bad... it was even worse!I am plan to visit bedford shortly so hopfully they will hold up well, I also have braided lines and uprated fluid.

If funds permit, then I would throw in a set of grooved discs - there's numerous to choose from (aside from EBC/Black Diamond mediocrity) in the form of:
DBA 4000 Series
Dixcel
Tarox 2000
Nitrac

The Z4 doesn't have any fade on the road. It also doesn't have any brake ducts! IF the car was going to be used frequently on the track then I'd probably look at fabricating some, but as it is I think that better pads, braided hoses and better fluid should be fine. Failing that, I'll put E46 330 calipers on with grooved discs.I am plan to visit bedford shortly so hopfully they will hold up well, I also have braided lines and uprated fluid.

The compact must weigh a bit less than the saloon, so fade should not be an issue on the road.
