Z4 roadster 3,0 engine query
Discussion
Hi.
I just bought a lovely Z4 3.0. Its a 2004 model, manual box. Engine pulls strongly but I have one question: At idle there seems to be a bit of a rattle coming from the engine. I thought it was a belt at first, but it seems to be along the 'whole' engine (I didn't try depressing the clutch, but I'm pretty sure its not the bearing as the noise is definitely from the top of the engine area). I've been reading up on the Z4 forums, and see various minor inlet manifold components this could be. But how 'rattly' is this engine as standard? (I'm used to a TVR Speed Six and they rattle).
If anyone knows more that would be great.
Ta.

I have just replaced the manifold adjuster unit on my 3.0 under advice from a BMW specialist. When I took the original one out the flap was loose and rattling. The car no longer rattles at idle.
Unfortunately BMW seem incapable of manufacturing plastic flaps on steel shafts to last more than about 60,000 miles!
It's a 5 minute job to take it off and have a look -
Remove air intake hose, remove wiring going to the unit, undo 2 torx bolts holding it in place, then pull it off.
£130 for peace of mind...

Mine is doing this right now.
Unplug the box in the middle of the manifold, the noise will go away if it is that which is making the noise.
My 'flap' however is solid. The whole unit is sold. It shouldn't cause damage if it fails. The transition of the flat is instant (just a live feed to turn on/off the device)
It defaults open (power mode) when failed anyway.
Remove it, check the flap is rigid. If it is, then I'd not worry too much.
The noise on mine is the standalone vacuum generator pump that is just rattly and noisy. On, and the flap is shut, off (over 4000rpm ish), and the flap is sprung open.
There is a new part number, so not sure if this has been fixed to have better longevity.
Any M54B30 engine has the same part, and it's easy to check (think it's just 12v feed), if it rattles/ticks don't buy it. I'm gonna go try the scrappers first. Not paying £130 for a new part just because the vacuum pump on it is noisy.
PS, 04 car on 64k miles... seems to be the age they fail. Not surprising, operating ALL the time to close the flap is alot of work for a little vacuum pump with no lubrication. Why they didn't default the flap closed, and have this little pump OPEN the flap over 4000rpm. It'd rarely get used and seem much more sensible as a duty cycle to operate on.
Hmmmm

I've got a slight hesitation on anything more than part throttle below 1,900rpm. Fine at all other revs and when gentle with initial throttle. Feels like a throttle position sensor or airflow meter not running right - but this is from experiences with other manufacturers engines.
Would this be related?

Is this engine the same as thje 3.0 found in my 2002 e39? I've noticed that on start you can hear a bit of a rattle.
I've had the same sound bugging me on my 2000 Z3MC - BMW have determined that it's down to the manifold on mine - replacement parts are on back order for me.Gassing Station | BMW General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
