My Wife has an '05 730D with 53k, we had the front Pads done at about 48K (Had new pads when we bought it at 23k)and they 'convinced' me to put new disks on it against my better judgement (£600 bill) It went in today for rear pads and lo & behold they called up almost as soon as we had got home to say that it needed new Disks!

I called this into question and told the guy that even though they were below BMW marketing limits they were perfectly servicable Disks, and would continue to be for some time. He countered by trying to tell me that the Dynamic Stability system puts a lot of strain on the rear brakes due to it being RWD, which sounded sloblock to me (I did ask him if BMW had got the Chassis Dynamics that wrong...).

When I picked up the car and spoke to the normal guy I deal with he confirmed that they should be absolutely fine until it needs it's next set of pads at around 75k, which to my mind is a perfectly reasonable mileage for Disks to me..

What is other people's experience?

that BMW and most other dealers will fleece you whenever possible. At a recent visit to Cooper in Croydon they told me very patronisingly that discs always need to be changed with the pads for safety reasons.

KiwkFit recently told me that you have to have new pads with new discs, and they won't do it any other way, doesn't sound right to me. They quoted £230 for the rears to be done.

I have always been told by Mechanics that its a good Idea to put new pads with new disks. Not sure why though.

Anyway, as I always say,

Buy the parts from Eurocarparts for £140, and get them fitted at a fast fit place (my local charges £30 odd) or find a BMW specialist nearby, they shouldnt be more than £200 all in.

£600 is robbery quite frankly.

You aren't comparing like for like though.

You're comparing a used part vs a new part.

Be careful, there is truth in the statement that rear brakes work harder and therefore wear quicker due to the dynamic stability system.
Additionally, brake pads are much harder these days so as a result disk wear has increased too. As mentioned by others - source replacements from other motor factors to avoid the ridiculous dealer pricing.

They are absolutely correct. Why would you be fitting discs if the pads were ok anyway? You must ALWAYS fit new pads when replacing the discs otherwise the new discs will wear unevenly to the shape of the old discs dramatically reducing their lifespan. Only under very special circumstances, ie where a reasonably new disc has warped or someone has just fitted pads on worn discs would I reface the pads to make sure they are absolutely flat and then refit them, and only then if they were less than half worn.
