Sorry this seems like it would be easy to find in search, but nothing. A mate tried to change his bulb but no obvious access. Does the whole unit need to come out, 2 screws on slam panel above light and 2 on wheel arch at back of light? Grateful for advice

I don't know about the X5. I have a 3 series coupe and the whole indicator unit needs to come out to change the bulb. To do this you open the bonnet and there are a couple of oval holes in the wing, right behind the unit. A screwdriver gets pushed down one of these holes, unlocking a sort of plastic spring clip thingy, then the unit pulls out.

If there are no obvious screws or fixings on the X5, I bet it's the same deal. I bought a Haynes manual and that is where I read it.

Unless you are a mechanic and done it before, I bet no-one would ever suss out how to do it just by looking around the unit smile

Front indicator bulb on an X5 is front bumper off and headlamp assembly out I'm afraid.

Pathetic eh!!
