Hi guys,

My 2003 E46 320Ci is nearing 110,000 miles and so far as I can tell (from the big pile of invoices from the previous owner) is still on its original water pump.

I've read that 100,000 miles is approximately the life of the pump, and that when they fail, it causes the engine to quickly dump all its coolant on to the road. Since most of my driving is at motorway speeds, I'm thinking of getting it changed as a precaution.

I asked my local BMW specialist about it, and they just said that they can fail at any time without warning. So I'm just checking... am I being over paranoid, or does changing it sound like a sensible precaution? Secondly I've been quoted £160 to have it done. Does that sound reasonable? Finally, is there anything I should have done at the same time whilst they're working in that area?

Cheers,

Steve.

Hi, if you are are having the water pump changed then you may as well have new belts. It will only cost the price of the parts as they need to come off anyway. I'm not familiar with the engine in your car, however, for my 528 I was advised to change the thermostat and housing at the same time.

Price doesn't sound extortionate.
