Hi,

When i brake on a smooth road everything is fine, when i brake on a slightly ruff road it seems like the ABS cuts in and i loose all braking???

As you might imaging this gets a little SCARY! so could anyone advise on what is wrong with my car ??

Cheers

i would suggest (non mechanical minded)that it maybe down to your suspension components. ie wheel not following road correctly and locking up when wheel lifts off ground???

Sure someone else will correct me later.

I had a similar experience the other day on 525i Touring, but has only happened the once and the car has been fine since. The section of road was an approach to traffic signals with a ped crossing - I think it is down to the anti-skid surfacing - if it is laid in bands longitudinally then there are a series of ridges - this may have fooled the ABS. Is your problem a one off?

I had exactly what you describe on a 2002 E39 530dT Sport at 40000 miles and two years old. It turned out to be the bushes on the front suspension which prevent fore and aft movement of the lower suspension arm. They are not particularly difficult or expensive to replace but they make a hell of a difference.
