I have two phones that can bluetooth to the car (Z4M) and both work fine except for the contacts directory. I have purged old numbers and tidied them up but the displayed list on the sat nav screen isn't updated / sync'd. What appears to be happening is the first time its paired it transfers the contacts and then doesn't sync. And yes I've deleted the pairing on both phones and played around a bit but the car seems to remember the original contacts. Is that how it works? If so it seems a bit poor! Alternatively how can I refresh the car contacts list? The phones are both Nokia's a 6021 and an e71.

TIA

Ian

Patience!

Can you delete the pairings in the phones themselves? Is there a setting in the phone about contact syncing

Not my strong point!hehe

If they do I can't find it! They will sync with a computer but not to a bluetooth device as far as i can tell

This is a re-post of a thread I wrote on babybmw.net for the N95, not sure about the 6021 but this should be relevant to the E71 as it also uses the Symbian S60 v3 OS like the N95...

me said:
Ive got a late 2007 1 Series with bluetooth and Pro radio. My N95 is an original (not 8gb) with v20.0.15 firmware (type *#0000# to check yours) and all my contacts are stored on the phone, not the SIM.

First off I used the Nokia 810 Downloader app which seemed to work, it can be set to run at phone startup, it runs hidden in the background and following the pairing which needs to be done AFTER the software is first set running, it uploaded all my contacts. The only issue with this is that following a sync, it becomes unhidden so you need to keep hiding it again, which is a bit annoying.

Following a bit of a Google I then tried the Nokia 500 Sat Nav app for S60 3rd edition phones, and this seems to work seamlessly, it does everything the 810 tool does but stays hidden all the time.

This should work for other S60 phones including older ones as there's versions of this app for 2nd edition etc as well. I dont know if it will work with contacts on the SIM, and I don't know if it will work with I Drive setups etc
This setup automatically updates when contacts get updated etc, so everything works seamlessly as long as the app is running (silently) on the phone.

Credit due to BMW Customer Services...

"Thank you for your recent email regarding your BMW Z4M. When you first pair a compatible mobile handset it will transfer the contents of your telephone contact directory. Where your phone book may change over time, you will need to completely remove and re-pair the Bluetooth connection. To do this, you will not only need to remove the car from your handset but you will need to remove the handset from the car. Once you have successfully removed each device from one another, then you are able to pair the handset again, which will transfer the updated contact directory. Please note that not all handsets allow you to transfer contacts stored directly onto the SIM card and will only transfer those stored onto the phone memory. I understand that this method is not necessarily ideal and you may be interested to know that we have since developed different systems whereby ‘newer’ vehicles will continually update the phone book content."

and

"If you would like to update your phone book, you will need to start the pairing up procedures all over again, but first by logging the phone off the system, as follows:

Hold the button (Speech Button) above the storage compartment down, then after 3 seconds, turn the key to position 3, and then release after 3 seconds.

‘BLUETOOTH PAIRING’ will then appear on the screen.

-Press the Speech button, for 10 seconds, until you hear the triple acoustic signal. ‘PAIRED DEVICES DELETED’ appears on the display.

-Switch the vehicle off, this will disconnect the phone book altogether.

You can now pair the phone from ‘scratch’ which will transfer your current phone directory."

Hi Ian

Im not sure what head unit your Z4M has in it or what age it is, but for the S60 v3 phones at least, the 1 Series would be the same as the "official" solution from BMW in that without the sync software installed, you'd need to manually recreate the bluetooth connection to get it to upate the contacts, so its worth trying to see if it works for yours too.
