Hi guys put a post on regarding my worn wishbone bushes a week or so a go and has proved a popular subject. But unfortunatley it has not done the trick although there was deffinatley play in them.My car is a 1999 318 and has only 66000 on the clock and feels tight as a drum over any bumps or uneven surfaces no knocks what so ever. The problem occurs when I brake there is a clunking sound coming from the front passenger side wheel area.It doesnt do it all the time maybe 1 in every 3 times I brake.Like I said Ive replaced my wishbone bushes and there is no knocking sounds when driving so surely this rules bushes out.The usual test of 3&9 oclock & 12&6 oclock but nothing.I have also checked the brakes themselves but cant find anything visually the springs are in place and everything.Has anybody suffered with something similar if so PLEASE PLEASE let me know because its driving me nuts.

A long shot,

I had an Audi A4 that was doing the same thing, and it turned out to be the pads moving slightly in the calipers as they were non OEM, in the end I put OEM pads in and new springs, this cured it, as you say, very annoying!

If it's a clicky clunk when dabbing the brakes at lower speeds mine used to do that and it was the brake pads moving in the carrier under braking. It was fine for ages after I fitted the pads but then started doing it intermittently, noticably after I washed the car strangely enough. I put it down to the pressure washer taking all the grease off of the backs of pads that weren't quite a snug OE fit anyway....
It took me ages to get to the bottom of it and it's a lesson well learnt in why not to buy cheap pads for a BMW....
Try Textar or BMW ones. Cheap enough to rule it out.
Horrible noise that sounds worse than it is too.

Holy crap, this has just started with my e46. I've replaced the control arm bushes which were knackered and it does feel like a new car but still have the clinky sound when I dab the brakes and over some harsh bumps. Was thinking it was the brakes but coulnd't really see anything wrong. Thinking back, this started to happen when I copper slipped the backs of the pads because they were squeeling.

Thanks! The pads and discs are due replacing soon.
