Anyone got any experience of the use of such additives as STP Fuel Injector Cleaner or the Wynns' equivalent? I've no idea how much crud my recently acquired 330Ci might have inside, but not great desire to start taking it to bits, so wondered about the use of some additive cleaners over the next few tankfuls or so, just to give it a bit of a clean-out.

Do's/Don'ts most welcome - and of course alternative suggestions too...

Oh, and whilst I'm on the subject: RedEx One Shot - any use in an E46? Anyone tried?

I doubt it will hurt anything, even if it doesnt do anything its probably worth a few quid for the placebo effect

Just run 'quality' fuel through it, Shell V-Power etc.

I used the one shot in my 205 gti twice.
I paid £150 for the car as it had a small crease in the front wing and it wouldn't idle. It stalled at traffic lights etc.
I thought what the hell.
After one try, it was better, more smooth and 50% better for not stalling. A couple of tanks later and the second one went through.
Cured the stalling issue!

i don't think they do much good but some have an octane enhancer which might make the car feel better. I did use Slick 50 on a number of cars some years back (oil additive ptfe).

Btw, maybe you've not got the 205 GTi any more but if you want a good fix for bad idling, let me know (suspect it's elsewhere on here, come to think of it).

No don't do it and if you're still undecided don't do it. BMW specifically advise against all after market / separate oil & fuel additives. Most is snake oil anyway.

Not recommended,i have read on other forum of a chap that put slick 50, in his e46 m3,the engine went pop after a day of putting it in,the techs told him that the ptfe had clogged his oil filter, thus resulting in oil starvation,(could have been old oil too, to compound the problem).

If any of these snake oils were any good, the manufacturers would endorse them.

I was just about to say that sounds like one of those Urban Legends that gets passed around on the basis of one unlucky guy, but...

NASA weren't too impressed, nor were a few others. Granted this is an oil additive, fuel cleaners are safer, they are used in lower concentrations in BP Ultimate and V-power anyway.

if you're going to go with an additive stick with the sort of ones that arent necessarily available off the shelf in halfrauds etc but are usually used by garages etc, like Forte and the like

I have always been a sceptic of additives and cleaners generally, but we stock a brand called 'Lambda' at work that we use on every service job. It is an additive that claims to clean everything from the fuel system to the injectors and as far as the oxygen sensors etc.
I gave it a go a while back. The MPG went up about 2MPG for about a month or so but slumped back to its average 23MPG thereafter. While there were no adverse effects or problems, I didn't notice any change in how quiet the engine was, how well it run or how well it drove at all. Hence I probably won't bother again.

If anyone used an additive when servicing my car I would be furious

My local BMW dealership has just started offering a fuel additive service for @£25 per tankful.

So would I if you saw how much we charge compared to what we pay for a bottle!

Wouldn't use STP or Wynn's, but have used Liqui Moly Proline and will soon be using BG Products 44K.
The additive in 44K is the same one used by Texaco (under the Techron banner) in Ireland.
Should be coming soonish in the mainland.
Supposedly very effective if you go by the reports from individuals if you Google it.
Interesting reading on Chevron's site about the additive.

I think that most unleaded/super has had detergents added to it for some time now, even the supermarket stuff.

I've used redex in the M3 on a couple of occasions with no ill effects, but would steer clear of oil additives.

BMW used to recommend STP and actually use it at each service around 12 years ago

In my Z4M Manual it advises against [oil] additives. I trust them and not the people who make the snake oil (Texaco) and certainly don't trust (unregulated) Internet contributions that can be easily 'placed'.

If there was anything in this stuff the oil/petrol/car companies would be on with it.

Avoid!

Been reading up on this Techron stuff and it has rave reviews everywhere. Also seems BMW sell it as their own.

Would the dealers have that for sale here?
