Hi all,
Seriously considering a 325 coupe, year 2000 reg. Hopefully going to look at 1 over the weekend, was wondering if there's anything in particular to look out for? What are the main problem areas mechanically, and what is the service schedule on these cars? Am I likely to be looking at a big service bill sometime soon e.g. Water pump, cambelt etc?
Any advice/ help would be appreciated!

Not sure exactly what to look out for, in terms of parts etc, but the service side of things will depend on the current mileage and which service it last had. My 325ci has 15,000 service intervals, and you should check the service booklet for stamps and see which inspections have been done most recently. I'm guessing if its a 2000, its going to be over 75k miles, unless you've found yourself a gem, so i wouldn't think the cam belt etc will be much of an issue as this should have already been done.
Just look for knocking when driving, gear changes should be relatively smoothsteering should be nice and light if the power steering pump is working properly.
I'm sure there are plenty of others here who can tell you alot more than that. Just make sure everything works as it should, including electrics etc.

Well, i find my steering to be light, considering the weight of the car. As i knew though, there are many people on here than no a lot more than i do about these cars! And i would have done the same regarding the 330, if it wasn't for the fact that im 24 and it would be pushing my insurance more than i'd want it to. I'm more than happy with the comfort and power of my 325ci, its been a brilliant car and a joy to own from day one. Thanks for the comments guys, I appreciate what has been said about 330 not costing more to run, but I can't find any within budget! The 325 I've seen is £3250, can't find any 330 within £2000 of that!
A friend used to have a 325 compact e46, which was a great car and plenty fast enough. We've got a company car for sensible stuff, but we've got an 8 month old daughter so we need another car that's big enough but fun enough!
I've got it in my mind that the car must be less than 100k miles on the clock, but is that stupid? Can these cars handle 150 k miles ok?
Also just thoght, can the passenger airbag be deactivated?

Thats a pretty cheap 325! I agree with the other comment, theyre more than capable of handling that type of mileage providing they have been serviced regularly. Whats the current mileage on the 325 you're looking at then?A friend used to have a 325 compact e46, which was a great car and plenty fast enough. . If you have the wheels off the ground check the front wheels by wobbling side to side looking for rear inner wishbone bushes with 'play' in them. Soooo common but cheap to fixGassing Station | BMW General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
