Afternoon all,

Where would you go to:
Sort a Sat Nav screen that has recently flickered and now died.
Get an ipod connected up and hidden in the armrest where the phone is.
Get the car bluetooth'd so I don't have to drill in a cradle.

The car is my 2002 530i Sport auto, it's a lovely thing. And seeing as I've decided to keep it a while I want to sort a few of these things.

Most companies I've phoned say "er yeah, we'll give that a go".

I'm really looking for "Yes Matt, we have done this many times, know want you are after and know exactly how to do it. Ergo our costs are reasonable due to a lack of trial and error and you won't have to keep coming back because we've buggered up your wiring loom".

So any advise of anyone in the SE who could do all this at a reasonable cost?

And before anyone kindly posts DIY pics of how easy it is to order some kit from the USA and how it took them 30 mins to fit, I'd just like to say I am just not like you. I'm not good at this sort of thing. I will get it wrong.
But of course, any wiring wizards out there that can do this will be supplied with as much tea and bacon sarnies as required to get a good job done! smile

So, excluding main dealers, who would you point me in the direction of then?

Cheers,
Matt

Hi Matt,

Not sure exactly where you are, and depends on how far you would want to travel, but there is a car audio place in Lightwater, near Bagshot, Surrey, called Unique. They have done both bluetooth installs and are particularly good with cabling etc. They may not be able to do much with the sat nav screen, but anything audio they come highly recommended both by me and a lot of other people i know and work with.

If it's not too far from you, might be worth giving them a call and seeing whether they can do what you require. I'm pretty sure they can, and wouldn't just "give it a go". They re-routed the ipod output in my old car from the kenwood HU into the glove box, and did a bloody good and quick job of it.

ETA: If i'd looked at your profile before writing, I would have seen tha you're in Kent. Again, might be quite far to travel, but i guess it depends how far you want to travel.

Hi Matt - have a search on http://forum.bmw5.co.uk . All the answers, + more lurking in there, it's all doable.
FWIW, I wouldn't give up on the monitor just yet: common issues are the wiring in the boot, the plugs, & in my case, the ignition switch. All relatively simple to check & fix. And, if you haven't done it already, a "reset" - disconnect the main battery for 20 mins +, then reconnect. Sometimes they just go off in a huff, this resets the lot to design spec.

I would recommend Turner Car Radio (or at least thats what they used to be called) in Croydon if that is easier. They were the only people I could find that had done ICE in a 964 model Porsche before and have a very good repuation. They are certainly honest so if you ask, they should be straight with you.

On this one, if I do this will the sat nav unit require a passcode to make it all work again?

All good suggestions, thanks all.

"will the sat nav unit require a passcode to make it all work again?" - shouldn't need a code, if it's the standard Mk4 DVD version. Might be worth taking the disc out, first, but mine had the CD version last time I needed to do this, which is a bit less stable compared to the DVD verion I have now, & it coped fine without removing it.

Grand - if you do need a new monitor, be aware that for e39s, only the cassette version fits without modding the heating ducts, so the e46 CD version won't, & the X5 version is set at an angle more suited to the higher seating position, so whilst it fits, it's not quite the same. They crop up on eBay regularly, but not always well described...

MattUK - will be interested in your findings... I'm in Sidcup and wouldn't mind a couple of subtle audio upgrades in my 540...

Tried BCA (Bromley Car Audio)?
