E46 is trying to die
Discussion
Hi chaps,
My E46 2.2 petrol very nearly let me down on the way home tonight but I somehow managed to limp home.
The symptoms are:
250 miles ago, at 70 on the M1 the engine cut out completely and was only turning over because it was still in gear.
It would try to start but as soon as any acceleration was applied it died.
On that occasion I scratched my head for a bit, then it started so I limped to the services, fueled it to the brim (still said 100+ miles on the gauge) and when I came back to it, it started and has run fine until today.
Today, coming out of the 50mph roadworks it did exactly the same again. I limped to the nearest layby, got the details for the RAC, tried it on the off chance and it ran OK for another 15 miles, until I tried to pull off at a roundabout when it died again.
It started again after some coaxing and I've limped home with it always feeling like it wasn't running right - none of that "silky smooth six" feel.
These are the same symptoms I just had on the Griff, when I found an Ignition Amp was the cause of my woes.
I have about the same amount of fuel in it this time, so I might go jam a load of fuel in and see how it behaves.
Just clicked 100k and its about to be traded in, so I think it knows somethings up!!!
Has anyone any idea what it might be?

No lights on the dash?
to me it sounds like either a cam or crank sensor, or the throttle position sensor.
if it's a drive by wire throttle, (which, being a 2.2, so a 320i /ci M54) if it was the TPS, either on the throttle, or at the pedal, you should be getting warning lights.
You could really do with diagnostics on this to find the problem

No lights on the dash at all. In fact, aside from the fact I was losing speed dramatically you wouldn't know there was anything wrong until I dropped the clutch and engine died immediately.
I've had the crank sensors changed (or is that cam sensors - anyway whichever there are two of) after the car would run fine one trip and the next it would have no oomph and was quite scarily slow on acceleration. Roundabouts would be a lottery sometimes
Think its time for diagnostics, although they couldn't find anything when they replaced the sensors last time.
I'm not sure about the fuel thing. It may be crud in the system. It perhaps needs a service and fuel filters changed.

Well the car finally died yesterday and won't start now.
I'd been out and all was fine, stopped for 5 mins and when I tried to restart it was sort of firing but felt like it was starved of fuel. It made no difference if I pressed the accelerator or pumped it.
Now it wont even do that, it just spins over.
Two things which I think are new but couldn't swear to.
There is a loud 'click-clack' when you turn the key and a humming noise coming from the box highlighted in the picture below

I'm about to swap the fuel pump relay for the horn relay as I've found reference to that. Does anyone know what the noises might be?

That box is some kind in inlet valve flap thing. My 3.0 just had a new one, the old one was rattling a lot - which they apparently do.I'd been out and all was fine, stopped for 5 mins and when I tried to restart it was sort of firing but felt like it was starved of fuel. Right chaps, I've changed the fuel relay with the horn one (changed relay 3 with 6) and its made no difference. I found a relay under the bonnet in a compartment over the passenger front wheel, this is clicking with the ignition turned on. It also stops the thing in the picture above from becoming live if we take the relay out. So it looks like its OK.
I've taken a plug out and proved I have a spark.
Now I'm looking at it being a fuelling issue so I want to check the pump.
Can't damned well find it though. I've got the rear seat up and found two things under bolted down access panels. The fuel filter has two feeds from the rear of the car (seen in pictures) so does the car have two pumps or is the pump forward of the filter (under drivers seat)
Where is the pump?
E46 2.2 saloon petrol if it helps.
