e60 Engine Light on

Anyone have any ideas about this:
My engine check light has come on - no messages in iDrive. Fault codes are 2186, 2187 (both "system too lean at idle").
Car has been occasionally lumpy at idle, and if you clear the codes it immediately starts spluttering (rev needle bouncing) but settles down shortly after. Fault codes don't come back immediately, but over the course of an extended drive they seem to.
Tried cleaning the MAF - no difference. Rather oddly I seem to be getting better fuel economy... might be coincidence of driving conditions though.
Not sure what to try next.
