hi everyone,

I own a 2005 530D auto BMW. A few days the car developed a lack of power sympton while i tried to accelerate, when i put my foot down on the accelerator it would not go past 15-20mph. The revs will slowly build up, then there was a sudden boost of power after approx 20 secs and it will drive normal.
To cut a long story short, i took it to my local mechanic, he suspected mass air flow meter or the guibo (what ever that is?).
To make sure he took the car to a BMW dealers to get a diagnostic report. While the car was at the dealers undergoing checks for the MAF meter the dealers notified me that my turbo had failed and the engine started to run on its own oil and it is completely damaged.
they quoted me approx 19,000 (yes nineteen thousand pounds) for the repair, but told me BMW GB are willing to pay 40% for the parts, which still leaves me nearly 12,000 to pay.

Can anyone please help me!!......

This is a VERY common problem on these engines, part of the cause is the engine cam breathers blocking up which in turn feed the engine with oil so will over free rev & blow up. Its very difficult to stop.

1) Has this car any history of the breathers being changed? It should have if it was serviced/sold through a BMW dealership. An updated part is supplied that does'nt block.

2) Turbo failure is often a common issue too, the VATN vains seize up which overspools the turbo, which is why the engine shuts down into limp home mode. If it does'nt go into limp home modes then you might start an engine breathing issue off. (see 1)

£2k should buy you an engine, £1k to fit it with an independent, maybe some electronic jiggery pokery required to make the new system work though

I just got 50% on parts from BMW for my 320d with a failed turbo. March 2003 FBMWSH.

I think it depends on history and age. <6yrs and FBMWSH should be good for 100% of parts.

Push for more.

Yeah, this isn't a simple turbo failure, the engine has ran on the oil and killed itself, not a nice situation to find yourself in, age, mileage etc of the vehicle?

Sorry its me doing my Stevie Wonder impression again, if BMW are willing to pay 40% for parts, is the other 60% made up fo labour charges, seems a bit steep to me.

5k for a new engine fitted?

and a new turbo?

Somehow I doubt that.

Is the OP saying that the turbo blew and the engine ran away during their own 'diagnostics'? Have they described how this happened, specifically if it was out on a test drive or in the workshop?

I've never experienced complete engine destruction myself but I can't help wondering if a dealer should have spotted such an imminent failure if the car was being subjected to an inspection my mechanics, can anyone relate to this, is it sudden and completely unavoidable or is there typically a lot of smoke and/or noise beforehand?

Gutted for the OP in any case, I thought replacing the turbo and cats on my E39 530d was bad enough.

Complete unit ex factory, think you'll find that's about "all" they are & a days work to swap to them over maybe two max, any more & they'll be ripping you off.

Recon as new turbo about £700-750 from Universal Turbo's if you wanted to do seperates.

To put BMW's quote into context, you can buy an entire 530d se with about 50k miles on it for the cost of BMW's labour charge.

Then do that and brake the broken car for spares to get some money back.
