E46 330i iPhone Integration
Discussion
Hi,
I've got a 2003 E46 330i with the factory fitted Bluetooth and business CD. What I am after is a dock mounted on the dash that I can plug my iPhone 3G in to charge and play music. What I also want it to do is at the same time to connect to the cars bluetooth to make and receive calls, fading out the music etc when the calls come in or I dial out.
I've tried a Dension Gateway 100 but that didn't seem to work. BTW ipodcarkitdirect were chuff all use at helping me to try and fix the problem
So i'm now looking at the Dice Silverline Pro. Has anyway got one of these and an iPhone 3G installed in their car? From what i've read it should do it but it would be nice to hear some real world opinions.
Also can someone explain why it seems so firkin difficult to get an iPhone to play music and receive calls in a car without a gazillion wires running everywhere?!!
Cheers guys.

Hi all,
Sounds as though you all need to upgrade to a later version of the bluetooth module and the official module that supports Ipods/MP3 players from a response above there. Also seems if your car hasn't already got these modules you'd have to buy them and retrofit first.
Remember, Bluetooth is a protocol that progresses in terms of it's development, so a bluetooth module from BMW from 2002 might not work with the bluetooth that's in a 2008 handset. If you're lucky and it does, all good, if not, then you need to upgrade the bluetooth module in your car or look for aftermarket solutions that will have more chance of working.
OEM BMW and for that matter other marques, electronics are usually very expensive from the dealer and even second habnd they'll make you gulp at the pricing wanted.
If there's any E46 owners without the much sought after 16:9 widescreen GPS/DVD setup, then to retrofit that, just the screen unit and Mk4 DVD drive will set you back usually around £5-600, then find a Bluetooth module, get someone to wire it in and fit it all up.. you can see how much and where this is going !!
However, it looks like owners are paying these amounts for second hand electronics, and for the integration in so much it mutes and allows the car speakers to be used. These are lovely functions of course no doubt! for me, my £35 SuperTooth sun visor system does the job perfectly, in so much that when a call comes in, I see my phone screen light up and I just use my hand to turn the volume down on the hifi, and I press one button. All takes around 2 seconds and saves me like around £900 !
There are some alternatives, after market brand new units from Alpine, Kenwood and Pioneer etc which have all the latest Parrot and Bluetooth electronics built in for instance.. but then reduce the OEM look which is so sought after in the BMW world!
Good luck to all looking to integrate!

I have no idea whether my car has any sought of bluetooth module. My guess is it doesn't. It has the 16:9 widescreen GPS you refer to but I don't think it has DVD. Given that it is a late 2002 car I would imagine these things became more standard in the later models? as far as retro fitting, surely I have the widescreen fitted, bluetooth capabilities aren't going to cost that much to fit are they?
Hi M400DPC
Not very many on ebay, one or two on auction so perhaps a potential bargain there. The often listed bits from Lithuania when it comes to the OEM electronics such as Widescreen monitors, and DVD drives etc have a listing for the bluetooth unit at £235+ £20 delivery. So, in and around the £250 quid mark to get hold of a 2nd hand unit. Perhaps it's an easy case to just 'connect it' and tuck it behind a panel or peice of trim to fit it, in which case it'd be free, or it could be a bit of a pain to fit, so perhaps an hours labour for a fitting shop to do it? I'm assuming at that stage it'd be picked up by the head unit and setup in your car and will be 'available' to use. However, 'IF' it needs coding to match your car, then you'll need to factor in that cost.
On top of all that, you've got to research to make sure it's the same revision of Bluetooth interally as at least the other poster who said his all works, so sounds like it has to be a unit from at least one of the months in 2005 onwards to work.
So potentially, you're looking at circa £300+ to get bluetooth fitted in this way. Brand new I'd imagine they'd be £450-500+ at the dealer.
How FAT is your wallet?!
