e46 330d - clunking when turning slowly and braking
Discussion
hope somebody can help...
a while back a sort of clunking rattling noise came from the front of the car whenever i went over a bump. it sounded as though it was coming from the suspension or under the car / engine there were also some noises as i turned at low speeds. i took it to an independant bmw speciallist who checked all the running gear said it was fine and the noise was coming from worn gearbox mounts. these were replaced and it all stopped. however, within a week there is no more clunking rattling from and bumps in the road but now the car has started to make strange grinding noises when i turned at slow speed - especially if i also have the brakes on which is like the second symptom i had originally. any help would be appeciated. my gut feeling from this and other things ive read is: either related to the brakes or something which conects the two front wheels underneath the car.....may be a steering rack or part of the suspension set up?!?!!?
cheers

IIRC the E46 wears out its suspension bushes pretty quickly. What mileage is yours? Have you had a look over on www.bmwland.co.uk?a while back a sort of clunking rattling noise came from the front of the car whenever i went over a bump. it sounded as though it was coming from the suspension or under the car / engine there were also some noises as i turned at low speeds. i took it to an independant bmw speciallist who checked all the running gear said it was fine and the noise was coming from worn gearbox mounts. these were replaced and it all stopped. however, within a week there is no more clunking rattling from and bumps in the road but now the car has started to make strange grinding noises when i turned at slow speed - especially if i also have the brakes on which is like the second symptom i had originally. any help would be appeciated. my gut feeling from this and other things ive read is: either related to the brakes or something which conects the two front wheels underneath the car.....may be a steering rack or part of the suspension set up?!?!!?

Sounds like the balljoint in the lower arm may have seized.
Mine did and it caused a clunk when going lock to lock and a clunk when taking off/braking at low speeds, as well as a clatter over bumps/potholes.
It's not something that will be evident by checking with it in situ either, as I found out after much head scratching and replacing of parts including the steering rack.

Probably more likely to be one of the ball joints on the front bottom wishbone if it's actually clonking.
If it's the wishbone bush then you will get bad (worse than normal) tramlining, wheel wobble under braking, play in the steering and if you look in a shop window as you pass and brake you can actually see the wheel moving around in the arch.

Just as you crash into the back of the bus, sorryIf it's the wishbone bush then you will get bad (worse than normal) tramlining, wheel wobble under braking, play in the steering and if you look in a shop window as you pass and brake you can actually see the wheel moving around in the arch.
