As per the title really, I've seen one locally, 5-speed manual, runs and drives ok apparently, tatty body (mainly due to faded red paint and peeling laquer), no MOT, awful bad-boy wheels (that would really have to go) but despite this it looks quite a straight car, sport body kit fitted (or it might even be a sport..?)

I had an e34 previously (3.6 M5) so I've a fair idea what to look for body and suspension wise, not familiar with the engine in the 535i though - any particular issues? What to look for to confirm it is actually the 3.5 fitted and not a smaller capacity unit?

I'm thinking strip it out, fit some decent quality secondhand rims and track rubber, change the oil and brake fluid, check over for any potentially dangerous faults and the abuse on a few track days until either it dies or I get bored with it and then sell or break.

Good idea or bad?

Sounds fantastic to me, but then I know nothing of the pitfalls of 15-20 year old bargain barges biggrin

For £350, how bad could it be?

Well that sounds worryingly like a Top Gear quote, like at the start of one of their challenges, and look how they usually turn out!! yikes

I live my whole life by the phrase "How hard can it be?"

New engine for the E30 having never done an engine change before and not having an engine crane......... "how hard can it be?"

Well two days in and the old engine is out and the new one is fettled and ready to go in.

Anyway back on topic. Get the 535i, I really wanted one but couldn't find any manuals for less than a grand, so I had to go with the E30.
