What can i expect in real world for mpg?
Just how reliable are these barges?

I had an early M60 powered 4.0l one, I got ~22-27 mpg with very little town use.

Later 4.4l M62 ones like you're looking at should be a little better.

The only non service items mine ever needed were front springs and bushes.

They are superb cars; go for it! thumbup

Lovely car.
MPG (steady 80 - 85 from Newbury to North yorks = 31mpg)angel although on the way back with a little more enthuasism MPG = 28.
My driving is 90% motorway and 10 % local, avg tends to be 27.

reliability: Very good, mine is a 740 on a "T" which I have had for 4 years now. bought at 70k miles, now at 150k, apart from servicing, other bits and bobs have been

1: Springs x 2, from memory £150 each (genuine BMW springs, locally fitted)
2: Water pump £300
3: Fuel tank £600 (this was a freak, as something punctured it off the raod)
All above covered by AA breakdown insurance smile

4 Front suspension bushes: £100 (done at 80k, will need doing again soon)
5: Battery : Bosch £80
6: Discs & pads all round £200, changed these myself.
7: Coolant hose £50
8: Gearbox leak + oil: £600

The car still drives beautifully, everything works as it should with no squeakes or rattles. Everything has been done as required with genuine parts and services a little early. Car has never used a drop of oil.
Now the warning bit,
Tyres are expensive: on the 18inch parallel alloys (235 x 18 & 255x18), Michelins last best but are £200 per corner.
When I bought the car it had an a folder full of bills, some were scary like the AC overhaul / replacement of parts for £1700.
I hope this helps & good luck.

Thanks for the info so far, does sound like my sort of car!
Tyre price is a little steep, although strictly a second car, so 5-7k a year max I'd guess, so not to bad.
Are these silly on insurance? high group but price wise?
Had group 17 car at £400 py so shouldn't be awful?
