These are fast cars yes? So why every time i pull up behind one the owners insist of doing half the speed limit. I was on the A10 this weekend and one refused to let me or any of the other 150 cars past. between 25-37 mph in a 40/50/60 zone. This went on for 6 miles. Then last night i was on my way home through some exciting and pretty quick B roads.... low and behold another blue Z4 soft top, doing 35 in a NSL. Made it very difficult for me to get by then stuck his finger up at me! What is this madness about.

I love these cars visually (i know little about there performance) but they just seem to be driven so god dam slowly.....

why people.... why?

You'd not have had problem behind me but I do drive the coupé version and not the old gay hairdresser's roadster version wink

Are you sure they were both proper M versions though and not just rebadged versions.

Plenty from you!

And I resent that: we're swingers, not hairdressers biggrin

Big differnce between a Z4 and a Z4M. You can get a Z4 in 2.0 guise..horses for courses.
The M on the other hand is a very eager machine and needs to be held back..its always begging to revved and takes a fair bit of restraint not to do this. That's without sport mode on..

Probably one with a small engine that can't actually go fast.

And 30mph? You should be able to blast past someone doing 30mph!

In normal circumstances overtaking a 30mph car would be fine, but the few i have been behind have felt obliged to use all of the road and straight line over taking corners, even on the A10 which is arrow straight this chappy weaved over both lanes..... nuts..

I did think when following the M badged one it looked a bit soft core for a M car.....

regarding the 0/10, it was not really a rant, i just wondered if these cars where utter st? or the base models are bought by people plainly not interested in driving.....

I have been out with the blue club in kent with a Z4M coupe and a Alpina model and i know they can shift....

Whats the base engine and power figures...?

I think someone above makes a valid point: you get the non-M's and the M's, big difference. I fall into the non-M camp but am at least interested in driving and at least own a 3.0i and not a 2.0 4-cyl posing pouch (or thong, going by recent discussions on z4-forum). The problem is there's little externally to differentiate what I have from the base 2.0i, so if you come across a non-M Z4 then it's difficult to tell what model it is. Doesn't bother me in the slightest TBH as I didn't buy it to pose.

I can see the point of slow versions of the Z4: not everyone wants the performance and are happy to plod along at 30mph. But it doesn't half give "proper" Z4 drivers a bad name...

The wife has a 2.0 and I must say when I drive it I find it much more normal to wander along than push hard. I try not to hold anyone up though!

150bhp isn't a lot and the very long gearing and reluctance to rev freely seem to make it a pain to hussle along.

I quite often pootle along in my Z4MR.

(no comments about 'verts - proper sports cars have no roof - the metal roof if for people fugly, timid and shy or worried about their wig, or shopping trolleys, saloons and people carriers)

Too often presssing on is not worth it, just get into a tailback 1/4 mile down the road.....so better to ease back a let the engine burble along...with the reassurance that if opportunity arises proper progress can be made.

Reality is also like most 300bhp plus cars license threating speeds can arise with ease so judicious application of right foot is necessary.

Due to the throttle settings on the Z4M. Do you not find it very hard to do this.. I mean pootle along. I also find the gear changes are just so silky smooth up the rev range to.

pootle along might be relative....biggrin

1st is sharp, lacking in the 1.5-3K rpm and due to infamous 1st-2nd/CDV issue, 3-4k its a bit stty sounding, so I tend to do 1st to 3rd normally, unless it a full'ish bore spin it to 6K+ then up to 2nd... but once in 2 or 3rd its fine, find 4th nice around town at 30'ish. 6th is waste of space, give me a longer gear for motorway.

I concurr on up the rev range....hence my comment about licence threatening.....when outside UK i've found changes great all the way up to 130.

It was in autocar this week that BMW have been fitted little black boxes to some recent BMWs to analyse how they're driven. It turns out of all the range / variants the car that is driven the fastest is .... the 320d.

Shouldn't be a surprise, it's a repmobile. They spend all day being hammered up and down motorways just like Ford Cortina's did in the 80's.
