Newbie here...

The nearside wing mirror of my 3 series (E90) appears to be possessed: it's started to move at random sometimes whilst I'm driving which, let's face it, is as useful as a chocolate teapot (and, come to think of it, probably nearly as dangerous). For info, the car has electric memory seats and the wing mirror auto-dips when reverse is engaged.

Has anyone here had a similar experience, or know of a problem with the passenger wing-mirror electrics in the E90s?

I've found reference online to people having had similar issues when unlocking E90s with the remote control and wondered if it's a related problem...

The car's still in warranty, but I want to be fully armed with any relevant facts before getting the dealership involved.

Any help would be gratefully received!

Cheers all

Mine has done it too, I also know of a few other people. Fixes seem to range from software updates to replacement of the mirror motor itself!

Sounds like it's not a unique problem then...

Off to the dealership it is.

Cheers for the response! clap

Let us know how you get on, for reference please! Would be interested to know what the actual fix is.

I've got the wheels booked in with the dealership, so I'll let you know how it goes.

Haven't had any smoke so far, mercifully!

For information, the wing mirror stopped misbehaving all of a sudden before I had the chance to take it to the dealership. I haven't bothered taking the car in to be looked at because I know that all I'll get is a shrug of the shoulders and a "It seems to be working fine now, gov."

If things change then it'll be straight to the dealership and I'll post the findings as requested.

BMW are aware of this problem, it is something to do with the grease contained within the mirror on the ball socket location bits I guess.

My passenger side this a while back and would set itself to unusual positions about 75% of the time (only on start up, not while driving). Of course the 25% of the time it behaved was while at the dealers twice. I also had a problem with crashing iDrive, so had a full software update; this cured both problems (under warranty).

Just realised (shamefully) that I didn't update this post as was asked...

The dealership replaced the mirror, no quibbles, and all has been fine ever since.

Thanks for the above input, everyone.
