under the bonnet. its the round thing which unscrews.

Not sure that is the "compact" OBD port. I think what he is looking for is under the driver's side dash, above the accelerator pedal.

This pic shows a LHD car, so the opposite side of the car, under a flap.

Only 1 way to find out.

IIRC pre Sept '00 built are under the bonnet. Post, and its in the footwell.

It has the round one under bonnet but does it have the square scart type one also?

I'm not sure it matters, does it? My OBDII cable has an adapter that converts it from the scart-shape socket to the round one.

My problem is that mine doesn't have the adaptor....

US spec cars had the OBD2 standard plug under the dash, but this wasn't brought across into the euro models as BMW were yet to be fully forced into OBD2 compliance.

That does also mean a lot of the OBD2 code readers won't work on euro BMWs despite claims that they will
I suppose it's best to call them OBD 1.5, they have all the obd2 style software (which was long and short term fuel trims/ adaptation) but it was only fully implemented in the US which got the extra OBD2 fault codes, the standard type obd2 plug, and the second lambda sensor after the cat to monitor the cat's performance.
