I'm looking to change cars in a couple of months and leaning toward a 328ci / 330ci on a budget of about 4k.

What are running costs like on a daily basis? Is the 330 a lot thirstier than the 328? Is the extra performance worth it?

330ci is great value, you should see 26-28mpg and a litre of oil every 2000 miles. Service interval is around 15000 miles.

Be warned though, if things go seriously wrong you could see a repair bill the wrong side of a grand.

For the budget I'd be more concerned about finding a decent straight car and worry less about getting a specific model/spec.

Be very lucky to find either for that sort of money especially a decent one.

It was this ad that put the thought in my head:

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1167274.htm

So i figured if thats up for 3k, there must be loads available for 4k....but it turns out there isnt...

If you're going for an early E46, which I'm guessing for the budget it will be, make sure you research the rear sub-frame/torn boot floor issue well.

That one really is a bargain & i would snap it up if you seriously want one. They don't come that cheap.
