2001 e39 530i touring tyre sizes

Hi all,

Now I have taken the time to have a good look at the tyres on my e39, I have noticed 2 things -

First I have 3 different makes of tyre (2 Nexen on the front, one Wanli(?) on the rear, and one Continental on the rear) which I don't think is at all an ideal state of affairs, so I am fairly resigned to purchasing a new set of boots...

Second it seems that the fronts and rears are slightly different sizes I have 225/50/R16 on the front and 225/55/R16 on the back, does anyone know if this is right? I thought the middle number was something to do with profile as a % of the width of the tyre, so should I be getting a match for all 4? The manual isn't really much help as I can't even see a 50 profile listed at all.

They should all be 225/55/16.

Not with 16's, only with 18's and 17's (I think, but will stand corrected)

As Mustard says, only on 17" and 18", and even then it was an option on the Touring rather than a standard feature.

Not on a Touring, no.

or on some 17" as some were 235/45 all round (mine is).
