I spent ages hunting around the engine bay looking for the service reset socket like what was on my last E38, before giving up and asking a dealer service department. My 2001 E39 service indicator is reset buy holding down the left reset button in the dash binnacle while turning the ignition to position 2, leav it held down for 4 seconds until the display changes to reset. Then release the button and press again for 4 seconds until it flashes, let go and give it 1 more prod to reset. Turn off ignition, job done.

The socket? To the right of the steering wheel is a little cubby hole, in the roof of the cubby hole is a flap that pulls down to reveal the socket.

Can't remember the way to reset service indicator without special tools (I have software on my laptop so it's easy) but there is a button combo I believe. Try bmw5.co.uk or google.

It's in the storage compartment beneath the controls for the headlights. It is protected by a tightly fitted plastic cover. Pull this, and it reveals the OBD port. The OBD port cannot be used to reset the service indicator using software on the net unfortunately.
