E46 air con problems

The air con on my wife's E46 seems to work only occasionally. When switching it on sometimnes it comes on straight away, sometimes after about 5 minutes and sometimes not at all.

Sometimes it stays on and sometimes it just gives a quick blast and then switches itself off again, regardless of the temperature in the car.

Any idea what's broken and how much it's likely to cost me?

Mine had a variety if problems (sounds similar but not exactly the same), it was the hedgehog resistor under the dash. It was a couple of years ago but I think the part was around £75 and took an indy about an hour to find and fit a new one.
The other culprit could be the heater blower motor, that's more expensive but as mine was OK I've no idea how much more expensive!
