330ci 2003 - Throttle Adaption not met - P1632 code - help
Discussion
I'm trying to find the cause of this problem, the car will not drive, but will only idle and when the throttle is opened, the engine will almost die and engine speed will not increase. I rang BMW who want 175 for a new throttle body assembly but will not take the item back if it doesnt cure the problem ( as it is an electrical product).I looked on AutoData which said the problem could be caused by wiring(been checked, no chaffed wires),throttle valve adaption and a throttle motor position sensor or ECU failure. Can anybody help me?
Thanks, Tom
Thanks, Tom
Might be worth trying a reset on the throttle adaption values - its free to try
Shamelessly ripped from google....
According to BMW's documentation, to reset the throttle adaptation you do the following:
With the car off, turn the ignition to the second position for 10 seconds(do not start) then turn the ignition off for 10 seconds. Then start the car immediately. You should notice slightly improved performance if you normally drive miss daisy.
I have also been told that disconnecting the battery ground for 20 seconds will reset the short term ECU memory but I can't validate that with BMW doco. These steps are necessary if testing or installing new modifications to be able to determine true performance.

I'm glad someone else is getting the same fault as mine now! I thought I was the only one when i posted this a few months back. I actually left mine, as it's only happened once every 2 or 3 months. I may try the same reset that has been suggested, just to see if this cures it once and for all.
Another thing to check if you haven't already was any small splits or cracks in the air intake or any lines running to the throttle valve. I took the airbox and lines apart when mine started playing up and double checked, but i've just put mine down to the valve sticking now. When it does happen, 90% of the time is when the engine is cold or hasn't been run for a couple of days, but like I said, this problem only occurs once every couple of months or so, and i'm reluctant to pay for new parts when the issue is particularly difficult to diagnose.

. The traction control light is on and cannot be turned off. Somebody told me about a throttle pedal position sensor can fail, this makes sence as the car almost run ok on idle when slight throttle is applied the revs drop and die.I'd stick with looking at what the P-code indicates, so that's Throttle actuator, not pedal, and not likely ECU, they rarely fail... the position sensor may be integral with the unit, and its far from impossible that this has failed, however I'd suspect its the unit itself not responding so if the wiring is good it may be time to bite the bullet... never easy without looking at the car...
A dealer or someone with a good service tool could log the throttle positions, commanded and achieved, and likely confirm a diagnosis... (and pedal position if you want an overcheck that signal, however the engine would likely sit robustly at idle regardless of pedal position if there was a fault with that).

I have the same problem when this happens on start up. As soon as i touch the pedal, the revs drop to the point of stalling. However, i have twice had this problem mid-driving, which has put the car in limp-home mode and is driveable. Thankfully this hasn't happened for a while. My solution when the car does this is to open the drivers door, turn ignition off, then wait a few minutes and then i turn the key to position 2 before starting to see which dash lights go out. I instantly know if they'll be a problem if the check engine light stays on longer than it should.

If you do get round to figuring out the issue with this, please let me know as i'd love to know what it is that actually causes this.
